Post and rail is a popular fence choice for lifestyle property owners in Rotorua. Particularly along driveways to homes. It costs more than a wire fence but pays itself back in visual value. A rail fence can have wire included to make it completely stock proof.
Where post and rail works best
Horse paddocks. Horse owners prefer rail fencing because it reduces the chance for injury. A post and rail fence gives the animal a solid and visible barrier to see and respect.
House yards and entranceways. The fence along your drive is the first thing anyone sees when they come up it. Post and rail changes how a property presents in a way that a wire fence never will.
Road frontages. When you are fencing your front boundary a rail fence is one of the best ways to make it presentable.
Yards and lanes. Where stock are handled and there is pressure pushing against the fence you want a solid surface that will not injure an animal. Rails are a standard feature of yards.
Two rail, three rail, or four rail?
Two rail if you just want a fence for a boundary and not to keep small stock in. This is the preferred fence rail set up for subdivision properties where no stock are expected. You can always add extra rails and wire to a two rail fence.
Three rail is the common choice for horse paddocks and general boundary work where the look matters and the fence is not holding anything small.
Four rail closes the gaps down. It costs more in timber and in labour, and it suits situations where you want a more finished look or need to keep smaller stock in.
If you want your rail fence to be completely stock proof we can add outrigger outrigger electric wires or run wires between rails.
Curved or straight?

We use long timber bugle screws to create a secure and long lasting fasten between posts and rails so that they will not pop off over time and under pressure.

What decides the price
Rail count. Three rail or four changes the timber and the labour. Four rails give you a more finished look and closes the gaps down; three does the job for most horse paddocks and boundaries.
Corners, ends and gateways. These are where the detailed work goes, and they’re what makes a fence look sharp from the road. More gates mean more options for you to manage your property in the future. I am happy to work with you to decide the best solution for gateways.
Access. Where a vehicle can get to the line, material moves quickly and the job runs faster. Most rail jobs are at an advantage here because they are right on road boundaries or driveways!
Whether the old fence comes out first. Some property owners prefer to remove the fence first before I come in for the work. Others prefer me to get it done! Either way works and we can discuss fence removal options over the phone.
Timber choice. Most rail fences I make use treated pine. This bends very well and is good value to cost. You may prefer to use another timber, call and let me know what you are thinking.

Common questions
Is post and rail more expensive than wire?
Yes. There is more timber in it and more labour putting it up. What you get for that is a fence that looks considerably better and, for horses, a fence that is far safer.
Will post and rail hold sheep?
Often with the right spacing between rails you can make a rail fence completely stock proof. But with lambs or pushy sheep a few wires between rails will complete the fence.
How long does post and rail last?
With today’s treated timber a post and rail fence can last easily twenty plus years.
